Children can start group swimming lessons from age 5. At this age, most children have the motor skills and attention span needed to learn in a group setting. For younger children, water familiarisation with a parent is a good first step before formal lessons.
SwimSafer is Singapore's national water safety programme run by Sport Singapore. It has six stages covering swimming proficiency and water survival skills. Many primary schools require students to pass at least Stage 1 or 2. SSA's lessons follow the SwimSafer syllabus, and your child can take the test when their coach confirms they are ready. Learn more at swimsafer.com.sg.
Most children take 3 to 6 months of weekly lessons to become comfortable in the water and learn basic strokes. Reaching SwimSafer Stage 2 typically takes 6 to 12 months, depending on the child's starting comfort level and attendance. Adults usually learn the basics within 8 to 12 lessons.
Lessons run at Jalan Besar Swimming Complex (100 Tyrwhitt Road, about 2 km from the former Kallang Basin site) and Geylang East Swimming Complex (601 Aljunied Avenue 1, about 2.5 km).
Fill in the registration form with the swimmer's age and your preferred day and time. A coordinator will be in touch with a class that fits. No upfront payment.
All SSA coaches are certified by Sport Singapore (formerly SSC) and hold current First Aid, CPR and lifesaving certifications. Coaches are also trained in the SwimSafer syllabus and child safety procedures.
If there is lightning, the pool closes and the lesson is paused for safety. If the weather clears within 30 minutes, the lesson resumes for the remaining time. If the pool stays closed, a replacement lesson will be arranged at no extra cost. Light rain without lightning does not cancel lessons.
Absolutely. Many adult students at SSA start as complete beginners with no prior water experience. Adult courses are designed for learners aged 16 and above, in small groups for personal attention. Most adults learn basic freestyle and backstroke within one course (8 lessons).
